Three dictionaries

Good afternoon, everyone.

My boss has three dictionaries.
All of them are English-Japanese dictionaries.
He always compares phonetic signs in these dictionaries.

I think one book is enough for the dictionary.
How do you think ?

By the way,his work has nothig to do with English.

Good evening, Nicolas, Ju n and メッサー.

Thank you for your comments.

The reason that my boss compares phonetic signs in three dictionaries is to compare them in American English and British English.
I think it is not so bad. But if he doesn't use the difference in daily life, I think it doesn't have any meanings.
I think there are many meanigs when we can use them in daily life what we learned.

I don't have anymore the dictionary what I used in my school days.
I useally use an internet dictionary recently.
I want to buy an electorial dictionary someday.

Hi, everyone! I am glad to talk with you about English in English.

I think Miel should ask her boss just like Nicolas said. I wonder why?? Collection???

Messer, you love ダジャレ? I laughed a lot in front of computer. I love electrical dictionary very much. When I was in high school days, it was so annoying to check new words using paper dictionary. It took lots of time and made me sleepy.

My dictionary has many functions. My dictionary is EX-word XD-D8500. I always bring it.

Hello, Visible (見える) な〜んちゃって(笑)

I agree with Ju n. It makes no sense that your boss reads three diuctionaries, because the phonetic sign of a certain word must be same in every dictionary. :-)
As Nicolas san says, I would also like to know the reason why he compares them.

I have not read my English-Japanese dictionary for long time since there is a convenient tools to know the meaning of an English word, it is internet dictionary.
I pulled out my dictionary now from the book shelf. I bought it almost 30 years ago. It is Shogakukan Progressive E-J dictionary. I love it because it contains good examples hot to use the words.
What title's Dictionary are you using?

Ju n san,
English-English dictionary is very good to learn English. In my case, when I read the explanation of a word, I need to jump to another word to understand the meaning. And I jump to another word to know what the explanation means, etc. etc. It is called "Limitless Loop" :-)

Hi, Miel!! Thank you for your topic!

Does he only check phonetic sign? It doesn't make sense...I think comparing dictionaries are not so bad thing. Some has certain usage, but some not. Each dictionaries has tendency. We can choose our favorite one.

I recommend English-English dictonary is good. Sometimes we confuse if words has same translation, it is difficult to find proper usage.

Anyway, I like to check dictionaries sometimes. There are lots of things I don't know. How about you, Miel?

Hi, みえるさん:

It seems to me that your big boss has only a limited vocabulary since all the 3 that he has are English-Japanese dictionaries.

I don't understand why he compares phonetic signs with those 3 English-Japanese dictionaries used. It's enigmatic. How about your asking him the reason(s) for it ?

How many (or what sort of)dictionaries you may want to have depends upon how deep you may want to go into English. So, it all depends。
